Health and Mental Wellbeing Project
Staff from each of our schools have completed the Health and Mental Wellbeing Project through Yoga and Meditation. They completed the training (trained by a qualified Yoga and Meditation Instructor) and delivered a supported 6 week training block to a group of selected students. They attended the training after school (8 weeks) and then delivered the Yoga sessions in their own time during Lunchtime or after school.
We are looking forward to being able to offer this as a club once we return to school. This will help students to secure clear relaxation and stress relief strategies through physical activity. Students can use these strategies to enhance wellbeing.

Holocaust Memorial Day Events
Over 350 Year 7 students from across our schools have worked with Historyworks, a company bringing history to life, former Children’s Laureate Poet Michael Rosen and local Holocaust survivor Eva Clarke for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD).
Students have attended a poetry workshop with celebrated author and former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen, in which they heard his own family story of the Holocaust and how he discovered over 40 years what happened to his Great Aunt and Uncle. He read poems he has written on the topic and students wrote their own original pieces of poetry in response to the project.
We also welcomed local Holocaust survivor Eva Clarke, who spoke movingly to students about her experience and the devastating impact it had on Jewish people across Europe, so that the horrors will never be forgotten.
![]() |
![]() |
Students will also take part in the HMD Civic Ceremony in Cambridge on Sunday 26th January at the Corn Exchange. They will read their poems alongside Michael Rosen, perform dance and drama pieces inspired by his poetry and the CAP choir will sing a specially commissioned song Michael has written as well as students’ artwork being displayed.

Cambridge Academic Partnership has been working with these partners for the last three years meaning over 1500 students have experienced the project and its lasting effects.
Craig Morrison, Executive Headteacher, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day serves a multitude of purposes in schools like ours. It is not only an opportunity to remember and mourn the horrors of the greatest terror and tragedy of the twenty-first century, but it is also an opportunity for pupils of all ages to consider issues of difference, freedom and identity in our society today. We are very grateful to Michael Rosen and Eva Clarke for their work with our students, which I know has been hugely valuable.”

Ofsted Good – a historic occasion for Coleridge
For the first time in the history of the school, the students and staff at Coleridge Community College are celebrating a strong Ofsted Report that has judged the school to be ‘Good’ in all inspection areas. It is less than four years since Head Teacher Mark Patterson was appointed to his position, so this rapid improvement for a school that had never previously been judged better than ‘Requires Improvement’ is a wonderful achievement.
“Strong leadership at all levels over time has continued to improve the school so that it now offers its pupils a good quality of education” (Ofsted, 2019)
The inspection team, who visited the school in early May, were quick to praise the leadership of the school at all levels. In its previous inspection, the school was found to have ‘Good’ leadership, but the more recent report highlights that this has been strengthened further since then. In particular, the school’s implementation of a standardised approach to teaching and learning – the Coleridge Teaching Approach – was seen as a significant strength of the school, with inspectors commenting that this approach had led to greater consistency and that it was reaping rewards for the students at the school.
“Consistently good-quality teaching, learning and assessment ensure that pupils make good progress” (Ofsted, 2019)
Having observed 34 lessons, the inspectors were quick to praise teacher planning and the subject knowledge that they held. Furthermore, the inspection team made positive comments about a number of aspects of teaching in the school, including the positive relationships between teachers and students, the regular use of quizzing, paired and group work, homework and the effective use of Teaching Assistants. The positive impact of ‘live marking’, where teachers mark students books in lessons, was seen as a real strength for improving the progress students make in each lesson.
“Pupils behave well in lessons and when moving around the school. The small size of the school enables pupils to be known as individuals. Pupils feel safe and are well looked after when in school” (Ofsted, 2019)
As well as finding safeguarding students to be effective, the inspection team identified the schools work to promote students’ personal development and welfare to be ‘Good’. Both students and families – who get the opportunity to feed their views to the inspectors via a questionnaire – commented that behaviour was good and that incidents of bullying are rare. Where incidents of bullying were identified, the school was praised for dealing with them quickly and effectively. Through Ofsted Parent View, one parent commented that ‘My children love going there, learn to work hard and I always feel the staff are listening.’ The inspection team also commented that this was a typical response that was received from parents’ views.
Commenting on the Ofsted Report, Mark Patterson, Head Teacher, said “This is a testament to the hard work of our great students and staff and the support of our families. It’s a historic moment for our school, and we are very proud”
The full inspection report can be found here.

15 February 2019
Under 16 Basketball Finals
The CAP Under 16 boys basketball team secured a memorable Valentine’s Day and a third district title in four seasons by beating Netherhall and Chesterton in the finals held at Long Road.
The team, comprising of boys from Parkside, Coleridge and Trumpington had an unbeaten run to secure their place in the finals. The semi-final against Netherhall went the same way as all of the early season games with a fast start with Luca Vicini providing the leadership and pressure allowing Josh Simon to score the early baskets. With a 26-6 lead at half-time Coach Foulkes was able to make sure all players contributed on court. Matas Cockcroft made an immediate impact with strong drives to the basket and three quick baskets to his name. The game ended with a highlight of the day, perhaps, with Karl Holmes calmly scoring a 3-pointer as the buzzer went to close out the game. 40-16 full-time score.
The final pitted us against Chesterton, rivals through the age groups for this group of CAP players. We had lost out in Year 9 but were victorious last year albeit with players who are now at Sixth Form college. Chesterton had won their semi-final convincingly and the third-fourth playoff was close between Netherhall and Cottenham. Again we had our trademark strong start and lead 6-0 after less than two minutes. At 8-2 in front our attacks stuttered a little and Chesterton took their opportunities putting further pressure on CAP. We took a slender lead into half-time 12-10. The second half started with the first basket to us after which Chesterton got back into the game further, even taking the lead at one point. Both teams were in foul trouble in the second half with every further foul resulting in free-throws to the opposition. We were able to get our noses back in front through Luca Vicini and with Chesterton chasing possession and giving away further control we were able to get a little control back. Into the dying seconds of the game Alfie Bruce Doig was able to extend our lead to 3 with one successful free throw. With 1.8 seconds remaining Chesterton took a time out. All that was left was for us to get the ball into play safely. The buzzer sounded signalling a 25-22 win for CAP. Visit to Corpus Christi
As part of the ongoing HP Club initiative, 30 students visited our partner college Corpus Christi on the morning of Thursday 17th. The students were given a valuable insight into University life, the college system, how to apply to University as well as a tour of the college itself. Meeting with current undergraduates gave our students the opportunity to ask questions and investigating the huge variety of degree courses on offer will hopefully have sowed some seeds of inspiration for the future.
In the future, our contact at Corpus Christi has also offered to come to Coleridge to offer other students an opportunity to access this valuable insight and this is definitely an offer we intend to take up.

Arts Fest 2018
On Monday the 9th July we held our annual Cambridge Academic Partnership (PFA) Arts Fest at Coleridge. The event is designed to bring together a large number of students from across the PFA schools, in a celebration of the Arts – music, drama, dance, art, singing, and all manner of mixtures of these disciplines!
Mr Mark Patterson, Headteacher of Coleridge, said “I was privileged to be here on Monday evening and what I saw reminded me (if ever I needed reminding) of the power of schooling to enrich the lives of young people. The feat of organisation alone that is required to pull off such an ambitious event on one school site is extraordinary – dozens of individual performances, over 500 students taking part, over a thousand families with us on the evening, the multiple venues and performances happening simultaneously… I do not believe that in any other school or multi-academy trust in the UK would you find such an event! It was extraordinary. And it didn’t just remind me of the transformative power of Arts education, it made me feel very proud.”
Mr Adrian Kidd, Headteacher of Trumpington, said “Trumpington Community College students, along with all others, smashing it at the Arts Fest ‘18. Amazing performances: hugely inspiring to see all our young people performing with such professionalism. 110%.”
We would like to thank all of the families that came along to support the event and, of course, every student that took part – you were all amazing!

15 Coleridge students from years 7 to 9 were invited to join St Bede’s reading club today to celebrate the awarding of the Carnegie Prize for Literature 2018. Results were announced at 1.15pm via a live link-up to the ceremony in London.
The winning book is Geraldine McCaughrean’s novel Where the World Ends. The announcement was greeted with groans from all of the students at the event -they had been hoping for The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas or After the Fire by Will Hill. The students spent the morning arguing about the quality of the novels and competing to answer quiz questions.
Ms Varney attended the event and she said the following: “I was very proud of our students for reading so many of the novels on the shortlist (there were 8) and for holding their own in negotiations with students from other schools over what should win. We ended the event by sharing in a large quantity of celebration cake.”

Coleridge Carnival Crew (Coleridge Community College) at Music for Youth Proms at the Royal Albert Hall on Wednesday 15th November – scroll down to see some pictures and a short video!
The Coleridge Carnival Crew consists of 39 student drummers and dancers from Y9 and Y10. These students, like all students at the Federation, studied a cross-curricular Dance and Music module called Carnival in Y8. They enjoyed this module so much that they requested an extra-curricular Carnival Club.
In November 2016 we entered a Coleridge Carnival Crew video audition into the Music for Youth Festival series and were automatically carried through the local and regional rounds of performance before being invited to perform in the national round in Birmingham in July. Here, students performed amazingly and wowed the audience with their energy and vibrancy. The judges were overwhelmed by our piece and in August, we received a phone call inviting us to perform at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall as part of the Music for Youth Proms. We were informed that we were one of 43 groups selected from over 40,000 performers who had applied.
After lots of additional rehearsal and some tweaks to our 10 minute Carnival piece, we were as ready as we were ever going to be. We left school via coach at 7.30am on Wednesday 15th November and arrived to VIP backstage wristbands and our own dressing room at the Royal Albert Hall.
In the morning we had a singing rehearsal with composer Pete Letanka who had been commissioned to write a finale piece for choir, orchestra and jazz band (1000 performers) – ‘Shine the Light Bright’. Pete complimented us on our singing and energy and assumed we were a choir rather than a Samba group.
We then undertook a full dress and tech Carnival rehearsal with the producer and technical team from the Royal Albert Hall and MFY. This included reworking our entrance and exits, setting lighting and blocking positions. All technicians and MFY staff were very impressed with our performance.
On the night we performed in front of 5,000 audience members which included staff, parents, carers and friends, some of whom had travelled from Coleridge on a supporter’s coach.
Student Reflections:
“Our experience at the Royal Albert hall was AMAZING, and definitely unforgettable. Being able to say that the Coleridge Carnival Crew have performed on the same stage as musical legends is incredible.
The performance itself felt like the first time we’d ever performed, even after all the months of rehearsals. Walking out onto the stage and seeing the faces of thousands in the crowd, including many loved ones fuelled the performance’s celebratory spirit and vibes. The hall itself made us feel so small but the atmosphere of the arena during our performance made us feel huge.
As soon as the first rhythm began, the nerves disappeared and we threw everything we had at the performance. Overall, it was a great experience that wouldn’t have taken place without our fabulous teachers, Miss Lewis and Miss Merryweather, who made it all possible and got the best out of us all!“
Ruby Elbourne, Ruby Cutmore, Ellie Lund – Y9
“We were all stood just below the stage, waiting for another orchestra to finish their piece. Finally, they stopped and the lights dimmed – our cue to go onto stage. As we walked onto the stage, our legs were shaking, hearts racing; praying that everything went smoothly – it did. Once the presenter stopped speaking, the lights went up and all eyes on were us, from all angles. The whistle sounded and our performance began. We got the impression that the crowd were shocked, they’d been listening to soft music all evening and then we came on, radiating energy. Mid way through our performance, the crowd began to clap in time with the beat, the other performers below us watched intently. When the dancers came in, the excitement grew and people began to stand up from their seats. Miss Lewis did the cue for the finish, and we all finished with our hand up in the air. The crowd clapped and cheered as we bowed. We struggled to contain our excitement and pride, so we came together, screaming and smiling. Walking off we had our heads held high, proud of ourselves and one another for what we’d accomplished. Performing at the Royal Albert Hall is something we’ll never forget, the adrenaline and the echo of cheering was still in our heads as we went to sleep. We say thank you to Miss Lewis and Miss Merryweather for dedicating their time to the Coleridge Carnival Crew and believing in every single one of us. Without them, none of this could’ve happened.“
Jodi-May Weaver, Ariana Ebanks-Blake, Lydia Sweasey – Y10
Quote from the Head:
‘What an amazing performance! Our performance at the Music for Youth event in the Royal Albert Hall ranks as one of our greatest achievements as a school – unforgettable for our students and their parents, and our staff, too! I am so proud!’

Poet Michael Rosen Visits Coleridge Community College
On 3rd November over 265 of Coleridge feeder primary school students joined Coleridge Year 7 for what was a magical time, working with renowned poet Michael Rosen and History Works. During the morning students learnt songs and wrote a poem with Michael, all based around the local history Cambridgeshire. Students were also treated to an animated recital of their favourite poems ‘Chocolate Cake’ and ‘No Breathing’ by Michael.
In the afternoon Year 7 and 8 heard the very moving account from Eva Clarke, a Holocaust survivor, who was born in a concentration camp and liberated at the age of one. Michael read some poems he had written about his great Uncles who had been imprisoned in Auschwitz. Students finished the day writing a poem with Michael who encouraged them to see a blank page as a friend and to write about whatever really mattered to them.
This was truly an inspirational day and one which will live long in the memories of both students and staff alike.

Artsfest – A Night to Remember
With over 400 students taking part in108 acts over 8 stages, this year’s Artfest was a huge extravaganza which celebrated the talented students we have across the Federation.
From the excellent Year 11 GCSE Art exhibition, to a feast of monologues, duologues and devised pieces in drama. The Radegund Hall was rocking with the sound of African and samba drumming as well as a STOMP inspired performance. Dance incorporated wheelbarrows, wellies and shopping trolleys into their performances! And Trumpington students donned the blue suits for a dance to a mash up of hits. While Year 7’s performed numbers from the hit musical Matilda in the auditorium. Over on the chill out stage, back lawn and quad there was an array of bands and solo artists performing covers as well as their own original compositions.
The night culminated in the Radegund Hall with a funk fest from the Federation’s very own funk band which had staff, parents and students up on the dance floor. It certainly was a night to remember.

Paralympian Gold Medallist Louis Rolfe Visits Coleridge
Ex- Coleridge student and current Paralympian Gold medallist Louis Rolfe, was invited back to Coleridge Community College to present Sporting awards to Coleridge students whom have earned recognition for their sporting achievements.
Louis Rolfe gave out individual certificates and medals to 18 students across year 11 and year 9 who have shown commitment to sport over their time at Coleridge School.
The students were clearly inspired by Louis Rolfe’s presence; Andrew Neziri (Year 11),
“This morning has been an opportunity to reflect upon our achievements and appreciate the rewards of hard work, which Louis Rolfe epitomises”
Anna O Grady (Year 9), “It was really exciting to meet Louis Rolfe and to see his medals. I would love to be in the Olympics one day”
The school have decided to name a trophy after the student after his recent achievements, the trophy will now be called the ‘Louis Rolfe Sports Award’. This will be presented to one male and one female student at the end of the year covering the whole school. Mr Dixon, Head of PE at Coleridge, believes this will create a legacy for generations to come and winning the Louis Rolfe Sports Awards will become the highest sporting achievements in the school as his name attached to the trophy embodies his values of determination, Inspiration, Excellence, Courage and Equality.
Finally Louis Rolfe said “It is amazing to have a trophy named after me. The thought of students winning the ‘Louis Rolfe’ sports awards in the future makes me feel very proud”

Coleridge Year 11 examination results 2016
Coleridge Year 11 students performed well on all 4 of the Government’s new key measures of school performance. The table below shows the significant improvement compared with 2015. Whilst still some way to go, the school is clearly on the right track.
National results for 2016 are not yet available
Government measure | National result 2015 | School result 2015 | School result 2016 |
% of students achieving A*-C in both English and Maths | 58 | 44 | 61 |
Progress 8* score | 0 | -0.2 | +0.2 |
Attainment 8** score | 4.8 | 4.2 | 4.9 |
% of students achieving the EBacc*** | 24 | 18 | 30 |
*Progress 8 score measures how much progress each Year 11 student made in their best 8 qualifying subjects from the start of Year 7 to the end of Year 11, and calculates an average for the school. If on average all students have made the amount of progress they would have been expected to make, the school’s score would be 0 (zero). Schools will naturally aspire to achieve the highest possible positive score. The 2016 result shown is a provisional one, given to us by a national company called Go4Schools, based on their own very large database of schools.
**Attainment 8 score calculates the students’ average grade across their best 8 qualifying subjects, using the numeric grade scale 1-9, where 9 is the best score that could be attained.
***Ebacc is the percentage of Year 11 students that achieved a grade A*-C in all of English, Maths, Science, History or Geography and a modern language (at Coleridge, usually French).
